Nurse Midwife Preceptors

Professional Mentorship and Instruction in Your Local Community.

PRECEPTORS

The Master of Science in Nursing - Nurse Midwifery program's clinical requirements are generally accomplished in your local community under the guidance of a preceptor - a Certified Nurse-Midwife who can share practical experience and provide personal training, mentorship, and supervision. To gain credit for clinical requirements, each Nurse Midwifery student must identify a preceptor who is qualified to approve and sign off on clinical evaluations as they are performed successfully.

Choosing a Preceptor

Your preceptor experience will play an important role in your learning process and often results in a lasting and mutually rewarding professional relationship.

For some students, identifying a preceptor is as simple as asking a friend or colleague. For others, the idea of finding a preceptor can be a daunting one.

Some Nurse Midwifery students have had preceptors who are supervisors or co-workers. Many others have leveraged community contacts within the field to forge a preceptor relationship with an acquaintance, or a friend of a friend, or even their own personal doctor.

Helpful Hints for Locating a Preceptor

Start looking while applying to the program. It's best to have this set up as soon as possible.

Your local American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM)† chapter is a great way to meet other nurse-midwives in the area, and may even lead you to meet your preceptor.

You should also look to attend the National ACNM Conference, as many students and faculty have met qualified preceptors at this conference.

Check out the Yellow Pages or Google for local obstetrics and gynecology offices.

Sometimes your personal doctor may be able to help you out or recommend someone else.
