CAREER INFORMATION

According to the US Department of Labor, nursing is the largest healthcare occupation in the country. Employment opportunities for Certified Nurse-Midwifes (CNMs) are excellent and are expected to grow up to 35 percent over the next 10 years. While growth is expected, the profession is also expecting a shortage, especially in area of midwifery.

The nurse-midwife provides comprehensive care to women and newborns including diagnosis, therapy, health promotion and risk-reduction activities.

Most CNMs concentrate on childbearing, family planning, and gynecological care, but CNMs may also assess and manage common illnesses in women. All services are performed in collaboration with the client.

As with WHNPs, CNMs are legally allowed to write prescriptions in most states. Health care management by CNMs includes independent management, consultation or co-management, and referral services.
